Types of “Android Auto” Devices
Currently, several types of devices are marketed or advertised as “Android Auto” devices. However, this term is often used incorrectly. The main categories are:
Android Auto
The official Android Auto platform where the phone runs the applications, and the vehicle’s display acts only as an interface. The user connects their phone to the vehicle (USB or wireless), and supported apps are projected onto the car screen.
Android Automotive
Android Automotive is a full operating system that runs directly on the vehicle’s hardware. Apps are installed and executed on the car itself rather than on the phone.
Tablets that run Android
Some aftermarket head units or standalone displays are essentially Android tablets designed for use in vehicles. These devices run a standard Android version and allow installation of regular Android applications from the Play Store or other sources. Despite often being marketed as “Android Auto screens,” they are technically just Android tablets.
This guide applies only to the first category: real Android Auto.
At the moment:
- We do not yet have a public release for Android Automotive.
- We do support tablets that run Android, provided that:
- the device meets the minimum application requirements (Android 9.0 or later), and
- premium features (if needed) are activated either by:
- signing in with the same Google account used for the Play Store subscription, or
- activating a separate license key.
